OOA Carbon Prepreg rudder for a raceboat.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS 

Polyester Tooling

OUTCOME 

CML used techniques to mould the prepreg rudder in the polyester tooling, curing it to 60 degrees Celsius before demoulding and then carrying out free standing final post cure up to 100 degrees Celsius. CML then painted the rudder in high UV clear coat to protect the epoxy from UV damage.  A typical rudder for this class of boat usually weighs 15kg, CML were able to bring this down to 7.7kg.

SCC Walk the Walls Panels

Description 

26 x Historic display boards in and around Southampton Old town wall ruins. Brief SCC Arts and Heritage Department commissioned CML to produce panels that would fit over existing display boards already positioned around the wall ruins. Detailed artwork was to be printed onto the surface of the panels.

Specification 

The specification for the panels: outdoor use, weather resistant, fire retardant, anti graffiti, UV Stable.

25 years

Materials 

CML used a DSM Firestop 5000-S-9747 gelcoat colour matched to colour “Southampton Stone” this was backed up with a 489PA/Prefil F, fire retardant resin system. After printing, the panels were coated with a Durepox - Repel coating system that was both anti graffiti resistant and UV stable. Installation The new panels were designed to be slightly bigger and to fit over the old boards. After the old boards were keyed up the new ones were glued on with an acrylic bonding adhesive called Plexus MA425.

Modular structure suspended over water

Construction 

Fire Retardant GRP panels attached onto a Steel Structure which sit on top of a concrete pier

Design criteria 

Dwelling subjected to heat, high UV saturation and ocean elements

Requirement of the composite 

Structural as well as aesthetic but requiring durability and low maintenance

Research criteria 

The architect wanted to create a unique complex with inspiration from superyachts. The crossover of requirement was so apparent GRP was the logical solution for its performance.

1:25 Scale Container Ship

DESCRIPTION 

Light Modular interior mouldings for Superyacht Tenders 

CONSTRUCTION METHOD 

Resin Infused Carbon Fibre, structural, F&F ready for spaying 

DATE OF PROJECT 

August 2008 

REASON FOR PROJECT 

SYS had been contracted to build 4 Superyacht tenders. Due to large amounts of equipment the tenders were becoming heavy, CML were employed to produce a light weight interior to counteract this. 

OUTCOME 

CML delivered all 4 interiors on time and consistent to the required weight. CML also filled and faired the mouldings ready to be sprayed by SYS.
